Knitting Question

I am currently working on the Shetland Tea Shawl from A Gathering of Lace.
I have worked up to the edging section.
Is there any reason that I could not use my Circular Needls to work back and forth on the edging section?

Or

Is it imperitive that I use the DPN/Third needle and thus leaving the stopper on the second needle?

I see no reason why you cannot do this, other than that it might get confusing.
